Deputation Year in Review

The last week of July 2012 our family set out on an amazing journey, the first leg of this missionary life to which God has called us. The past thirteen months have been a whirlwind of meetings, conferences and family gatherings. God has blessed in various ways, and we are so THANKFUL!

We are thankful for God’s protection on the road. Over forty-one thousand miles and counting, and only one flat tire. We would like to keep that streak going, so we would appreciate your prayers for traveling safety.

We are thankful for ministry partners. Both those who have been partnering with us within the last year, and those new partners we’ve just added. Praise the Lord for bringing in 53% of our needed support, with several other churches desiring to partner with us as soon as God provides them opportunity. Through your prayers we’ll get there!

We are thankful for our sending church. Cherry Street Baptist Church has always been such a blessing and encouragement in our lives: in giving us opportunities to serve and to grow, faithful prayer and financial support, and a great example in reaching the lost for Jesus Christ. It was great spending a few Wednesdays in July with them, and helping reach local families through Vacation Bible School.

We are thankful for our families. This past summer we were able to spend time with both Ben and Rachelle’s families in three family reunions. It was great updating family members on God’s leading in our life, enlisting several more prayer and financial partners, and seeing them all together before we leave for Argentina.

End of summer bash in St. LouisWe are thankful for time together as a family. Traveling constantly can be an incredible drain on a family, but God has allowed us to still mix in times of good family fun. We have personally seen missionaries and their children affected negatively by this entire process, so it is always a burden on our hearts to help them catch our burden and see the need for this process. It has been great to watch them grow and learn as we travel along.Kids first day of school

We are thankful to be a part of changed lives. We have had the privilege of seeing people make decisions to follow Christ or completely surrender to the Lord’s will. In July two people in one household received Christ. In August we saw 36 children come to know Jesus as their Savior while at VBS, and a young man in Illinois surrendered to missions after a conference. God is still saving and calling people. This makes ANY hardship we go through completely worth it!

We are thankful for God’s provision. He meets our daily and traveling needs, but also has provided enough funds for our airline tickets needed for getting to the field. We can now start saving up for other start up costs we will incur. If you would like to help with our setup costs, that would be a tremendous blessing, every little bit helps.  You can access our List of Needs by clicking on the link. We do strongly encourage you to give through your local church’s mission program, but if that is not possible, please click here to go to our donation page.

May June 2013

Fellowship

In May we were able to minister to several churches in the Springfield, Missouri area. Each one expressing a desire to partner with us as they are able. We also had a great time of fellowship with other missionaries and pastors at the May fellowship meeting, and Ben had an opportunity to fill up the calendar a little more. We also had the opportunity to help Rose Hill Baptist Church with their first missions conference. What a blessing! June took us up to Minnesota where we had the opportunity to present our ministry at First Baptist church in Baxter, which is Rachelle’s parents’ sending church. We were able to thank them for the impact they’ve had in Rachelle’s life and gain valuable prayer partners. We praise the Lord for several other churches in Iowa and Wisconsin that are considering us for regular monthly support after sharing our ministry with them. We are praising the Lord that over 37% of our needed support has come in, another 10% has been promised and 100% of our airline tickets funds have been raised!

Family

In June we were able to spend time with Rachelle’s family on both her father and mother’s sides through two family reunions. It was great to update family members on God’s leading in our life, enlist several more prayer partners and see them all together before we leave for Argentina, since we will probably not see them again for a long time. We know family time can be stressful with large get-togethers, but we are blessed with a great Godly heritage. It was such a joy to spend almost a full week with each side, seeing how God is working in everyone’s lives. We are so thankful Rachelle’s grandparents brought up their children to love God, which is a large reason why there are missionaries, pastors, and lay leaders throughout both sides of her family. It is one of the  reasons why Rachelle learned to love and serve God!

Future

We are thankful for help in planning. Rachelle’s parents, Barry and Diane Courts, were on furlough during the month of June, which allowed us to spend time with them as well. They are excited about our deputation progress almost as much as we are. It was very helpful to sit down with them and ask particular questions that would help us prepare even more for ministry in Argentina. Once again, God used that to stir our hearts for the millions of Argentines who do not yet know Christ. God also provided enough funds for all our airline tickets needed for getting to the field. We can now start saving up for other start up costs we will incur. We will have a list of items and monies needed for that very soon!

March April 2013

The New Argentine Pope

We were taken by surprise along with most of the world when Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected to be the new pope on March 13. Since then many people have asked if an Argentine pope would be a help in spreading the Gospel in Argentina. We always hope and pray that doors would be opened for the Lord’s work, but this is not one of them.

The Argentine people are already enslaved by the Catholic religion,  giving them a false sense of security based on the good works they do. They are also a proud people, and stand tall on their strong Catholic heritage passed on through deep family traditions. Now the typical Argentine is deceived into believing they are safe under the umbrella of Catholicism and Pope Francis. This creates even more of an obstacle for sharing the message of the Gospel, that Jesus is the only hope of salvation. Our burden for the Argentine people has deepened, and our resolve to get there has only intensified. Please pray with us for the Gospel to have free course through the work of current missionaries there, and for our own deputation journey to be done quickly and effectively. There are still over 36 million people who do not know Christ, and no pope will save them!

Deputation Update

We are excited to report that our deputation journey is going well. The last few months have been extremely busy, with just about every church service time booked. After nine months of deputation, traveling to and/or through thirty-one different states and over thirty thousand miles, our support level is just over thirty percent of what we need. This is on track with our goal of being on the field by August of next year.

We praise the Lord for the blessing of coming alongside many churches to help encourage them during their mission conferences. Not only has God provided more ministry supporters, but also valuable prayer partners. Also, through the much appreciated generosity of a couple New Mexico churches, Temple Baptist in Hobbs  and Faith Baptist in Artesia, we have enough funds raised for four airline tickets! It is incredible to see God’s faithfulness in providing for those future needs.

School Field Trip

We have been blessed in so many ways these past few months, individually, and as a family. One of the fun things we were able to do thanks to Crosspointe Baptist Church in Cincinnatti, OH, was go to the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum in Kentucky! It was a wonderful place to visit. We made it a field trip for the kids’ homeschool (Hands-on is the best way to learn!) Everything was top-notch quality, and it was great   to be able to point things out to our children that we’ve been telling them over the years, and explain to them how Creation and the Biblical worldview DOES fit in with science. It was probably more exciting for us adults to see it all, but I know many of the things stuck in our children’s minds as well. We would recommend it to anyone wanting to help reinforce the biblical worldview in the hearts and minds of their children. It was a great help to us!

While we were there, we purchased a Creation DVD, and the other day when our children were playing with the children next door (who are not saved), Natalie asked if she could show them the video that “proves Creation is real.” I was so happy that she’s thinking of her friends’ souls and wanting them to see the truth. We pray our kids will catch our burden to reaching the lost with the Gospel also.

The kids loved it!

The kids enjoyed learning about Creation, dinosaurs and Noah’s Ark!

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support!

January February 2013

“You’re Not A Priest”

“You can’t read it on your own, you’re not a priest.” That was his family’s response when he expressed his desire to read the Bible while growing up. We met Argentine-born Victor, a member at a supporting church in Delaware. He shared with us the same story most Argentine Catholics could share. If they had access to a Bible, their religion does not allow them to read it. Only the priests supposedly can understand the scriptures. Victor was fortunate enough to come face to face with the Gospel message later in life here in the United States, and has led his family in following the Lord. But there are millions of Argentines who are being deceived by these false religions, blinding them from the truth of God’s Word. Would you take a moment to pray for the Gospel to spread in Argentina, that God would work in the hearts of lost souls before we even get there? Please pray with us we can get there as soon as possible!

Finding Opportunities in Nemo

Picture2 This past February, we found ourselves just north of Boston, in Burlington, MA. Blizzard Nemo also found itself there at the same time. Needless to say, we stayed inside for a couple of days. The church we were scheduled at Sunday morning had to cancel services, as many churches in the area did, so our time there seemed like a waste. However, while shoveling our van out of the snow, Ben had the opportunity to briefly witness to the hotel clerk on duty that day. He left him with a tract and pointed him to the church down the street (where we had been scheduled that Sunday morning). Please pray for Victor, that God’s Word would pierce his heart and change his life and eternity. We do not know God’s specific purposes in where He leads us, but we do know He uses us to share the Gospel with unbelievers and challenge believers wherever we go. Let us be faithful!

Christian Parenting

Sometimes, as parents, we feel that nothing is getting through to our children. All the time we invest into them reading Bible stories, taking them to church (multiple times a week if we are in a mission conference!), having discussions about God, and even praying with them can sometimes seem to roll in one ear and out the other. That’s when we pray SOMETHING will stick; that some little Godly nugget of “wisdom” will point them to  Christ. If you feel like we do sometimes, don’t lose heart.

Remember, as we have to, that God is using you, as a Christian parent, to impact your precious children’s lives, whether you see it yet or not.

Picture1And when you despair (as we sometimes do) look at the little signs that show you some of it is “sticking”. These signs such as when our six year-old says, “Read just one more chapter please!” when we are reading a book about heaven; we look back in the van while on a trip and our two oldest children are  doing their devotions; our four year-old sings along with the words of Christian songs we listen to in the van; or our eight year-old prays, “Thank you for the privilege of going to Argentina to tell them about Jesus.” These little things make our days brighter. We know SOME things are sinking in, and God’s Word, whether in song or in written form, does not return void (Isaiah 55:11). It will change their lives, and we can’t wait to see that happen!

November December 2012

Year End Report

“It’ll be fun!” were the words we heard our pastor say when we left his office early January 2012 as he helped us prepare for our approval and deputation to start soon after.  We were never sure how he got his definition of “fun,” but we were about to find out!

After the first five months of deputation, and over 15,000 miles later, God has blessed us with a total of eleven ministry partners. We have experienced God’s timely provision and blessing through His people. We have made new friends and have been reunited with old friends in the churches we have visited. Not only do we see His blessing to us through local churches, but we are also humbled to be used to minister and challenge these same churches to increase their role in taking the Gospel to a lost world. We know of at least one young lady who surrendered her life to full-time missions during a conference in November. We continually pray for more souls won to Christ and more hearts  surrendered to take up the call.

During the holiday season we were able to take a little time to regroup, resupply and prepare for setting out on the deputation trail once more. We have a pretty full calendar for the next few months, and we are looking forward to all that God has in store. It’ll be fun!

 His Work in Us

KidsOur hearts are so full as we look back on this year of 2012. We have been blessed beyond measure in so many ways. One of the ways in which we have been blessed was seeing our son Lucas come to know the Lord! He accepted Jesus as his Savior in October while doing homeschooling one day. The Bible lesson in our daily homeschool curriculum showed him, once again, that he needed to be saved from his sins and hell, and he asked Jesus into his heart! We wanted to be sure he understood, so we held back from announcing it much until we had asked him on multiple occasions what his salvation truly meant to him. He seems to understand it fully and we can tell there is a  difference in his own life. Now we are talking about baptism, with him, which will hopefully happen soon. Thank you to all of you who have prayed for our children! Keep praying that Natalie and Lucas will grow stronger in the Lord, and that Alenna will be saved soon also. We are always so amazed at God’s powerful work through prayer.

Ben N ChelleThis past December, we had the privilege of celebrating a milestone for our marriage, our eleventh anniversary. Having grown up as missionary kids, both of us have seen the importance of a strong marriage in the ministry. We were thankful to be able to leave the kids with the grandparents and get away for a couple of days, which is a rare thing while on deputation.  We praise God for His eternal love and compassion for us!

The Power of the Word

One of the greatest things about deputation is the many opportunities to meet new people and coworkers in the ministry. Many of these new friends are a constant reminder of the awesome life-changing power of God’s Word.

Crossroads Ministries

We’ve had the recent pleasure of meeting a group of men from a local rescue mission while at a church in Virginia.  Scott, one of those men, shared with us his difficult journey to repentance, recovery and restoration. His excitement and praise to God were contagious!

While at another church in New Mexico, Tom shared his ten-year journey to God and away from alcohol. He is steadily growing, changing and influencing others to do the same. We thank God for these lives that have been delivered by the Gospel, but our hearts are ever more burdened for the millions of Argentines who have yet to hear this message of hope.

12,000 miles and counting…

We have just finished three months of full-time deputation, and been amazed at how God has provided and blessed.

With over twelve thousand miles on our van, we have now become experts at packing (which we now call “fitting,” “squeezing,” or “cramming”). We thank God for the continual safety as we drive from church to church. He shows us again and again that He is in control!

Ministering together with new friends.

Since our last prayer letter, we have another five churches who have committed to help us take the Gospel to the Argentine people. It is such an honor to be included among their missionary families, and to encourage these churches to continue faithfully praying and giving so that the Gospel will reach the unreached.

We also had the opportunity to get to know several veteran missionaries in some mission conferences, being encouraged by their faithfulness and resolve to do whatever it takes to reach and train others for the Gospel.

We cannot count how many new prayer partners we have behind us, but what an encouragement knowing there is an army of people going to the throne of grace on our behalf!

God’s handiwork

One word we want our children to use when looking back on deputation is “fun”. “Fun” is not the reason why we travel all over the country to churches, but it does make it easier on our children. While we, as adults, are called to be missionaries, our children are along for the ride. So, as much as possible, we want to make it enjoyable for them.

One way we do this is by finding sites (usually free or cheap) to  experience. Because of this we have seen many things in our beautiful country ranging from the Smithsonian Museums to Niagara Falls. As adults, our  favorites do tend to be the natural wonders of the United States. We love sharing these with our children, and they enjoy it also. It gives us extra moments to be in awe of our awesome God who formed the canyons, mountains, and waterfalls. Step outside and enjoy the magnificent world God has given us. It will remind you of God’s greatness! Psalm 19:1.

Summer 2012

The End of the Beginning

God closed one chapter of our lives and started writing a new one this past May. We finished our mission internship at our sending church, Cherry Street Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri under Pastor Dennis Jennings, and started the process of approval with the Baptist Bible Fellowship.

The church held a commissioning service for us, reminding us of the importance of the local church in spreading the Gospel  to the world. We simply could not carry out God’s call on our lives without the support of the faithful churches behind us. We are so thankful for our sending church and all that God has taught us during our time there. What a blessing!

The May Fellowship meeting proved to be a busy time in our lives. Not only was there a lot of things to do, but there were also a lot of people to meet! All the pastors we met during our approval committees were so encouraging, and the approval time itself was inspiring. We thank God for the great support team we have through the BBFI Mission Office in helping us carry out our call to Argentina.

The month of June brought with it a large preparation list to be completed before heading out on the deputation. From packing up the house and selling just about everything, to getting the van ready to go and figuring out how we would fit all we needed: it all had to be done.

Ben’s ordination service

Ben’s ordination was a major item on that list, for which he had been preparing. On June 24th, Ben was ordained to the ministry. What a humbling thought to know that the Holy God uses cracked vessels to herald His message. We praise God for His Word, the power it holds to change lives, and those He has used to challenge us with it. We look forward to the many opportunities we will have to minister to others on deputation.

Starting a New Adventure!

Life is always an adventure when you are on the road. We are learning to pack everything we will need for two– four months at a time in a van and car-top carrier, along with our whole family in less than half an hour! Not only that but we travel for days and when we stop we need to have freshly laundered and ironed clothes, and happy attitudes! It isn’t easy, but with Christ all things are possible!

Our kids ready to go!

We were excited and nervous starting out but God knew what we needed even before we did. He provided some wonderful churches to start out with in the Northeast. We wanted to be a blessing to these churches, but they were definitely a blessing to us! It has only been four weeks into our deputation journey and we have already had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people, sharing our burden for Argentina,  and growing closer as a family. God is good!

January Prayer Letter

From the Foothills to the Mountains

God has taken our family on an incredible journey to get us where we are today.  We have been serving as mission interns at our home church, Cherry Street Baptist Church in Springfield Missouri under the ministry of Pastor Dennis Jennings.

We have learned so much by serving in various  areas of the church, including children and youth ministries, music and the Reformers Unanimous addiction ministry. We have been overjoyed to reach and serve people with the changing power of Jesus Christ.

However, we realize we have been journeying through the foothills just before the mountains.  God has been preparing us for BIGGER things.

This May, 2012, we will be going up for approval as Baptist Bible Fellowship missionaries to Argentina.  We will begin our deputation trail, and Lord willing be on the field as career missionaries in 2014.  Our goal is to establish local churches that will carry out the Great Commission and reach the people of Argentina for Christ.

This is such an awesome task we could never do it without His power and your prayers.  We appreciate your intercession for our family as we prepare for the journey ahead.  Please pray also that God would go before us and prepare the hearts of the Argentine people to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In Christ alone,

Ben for the Metzger Family
